Christian Boltanski is one of the most internationally acclaimed artists of our time. In 2006 he was awarded the Praemium Imperiale. His artistic work revolves around the themes memory, death and loss.
For his solo exhibition at Arndt & Partner in 1996, Christian Boltanski created the work "Reliquaire - Les Lingesin".
Relics are no longer those of saints, but vestiges of anonymous people, traces of strangers, with which it seems to be a question of communicating.
Since the 1960s, he has worked with the ephemera of the human experience, from obituary photographs to rusted biscuit tins. Several of Boltanski's projects have used actual lost property from public spaces, such as railway stations, creating collections which memorialise the unknown owners in the cacophony of personal effects.
